Looking For Space

In the beginning stages of visualizing, planning, and creating my business, coming up with a name for it was something I had to accomplish early on. I was surrounded by many different opinions: Make it catchy. You should totally use your last name. Make sure you use the word organize in it somewhere. Be clear on what it is you’re doing. Don’t leave people guessing.

It was a momentous decision. This was more than a business. This was putting a label on what was soon to be my life’s work. It felt like naming a child or placing a title on a book.

But I knew my work was going to be more than helping people declutter or find the perfect storage bin. I wanted to help people clear their paths so they would be able to experience tranquility, simplicity, spaciousness, and peace in their lives. I wanted to help them create the space they needed to help them be the best version of themselves.

Maria Best Organizing definitely did not say that.

I mulled. I pondered.

Then I went into the Forest to slow down the incessant thinking. I went outside where there are no walls or ceilings impeding the messages or trapping my thoughts.

You see, this part of my story is bigger than me. It has not come from me; it has come through me. The Universe whispered, “I need you to do this. People are searching for stillness. Here is the answer to the question you have been asking most of your life. Take every lesson and every experience and apply what you know to be true.”

When it came to this particular chapter in my life, starting my own business and being brave enough to do my own thing didn’t scare me, it thrilled me. It invigorated me and set my soul on fire. I was more afraid of not doing it. I was more afraid of staying on the hamster wheel and waking up when I was 90 full of remorse and regret. I had a purpose that demanded fulfillment. A responsibility had found its way to me and it was my obligation to bring it to life. Saying no just wasn’t an option.

I had to create space to make room for clarity around what I was doing because I didn’t have a map or a blueprint for where I was going. I needed a calm and supportive environment that provided me with a clear and unobstructed current to flow through.

I had to go deep into myself and tune out the noise and tune into the frequency of my heart. I had no room in my field of dreams for anyone to scatter or plant a single seed of doubt or indecision or what-ifs. I stopped asking people for directions to places they had never been. I needed my environment to be clear of negativity and to be spacious enough to support what I was bringing to life.

I had taken the time to prove to the Universe that I could be trusted with big things, and, therefore, It was showing up for me in big ways. My only job was to keep asking It what It needed me to do next and to just keep doing it.

When I returned from the Forest, I turned my music on. It was the very first song that came on, and I knew had my answer as soon as I heard the first line…

On the road of experience

I’m trying to find my own way…

Of course. His music had been the background to my life. While I grew up, it was the only music I remember my mom ever playing, and his albums were the only albums I ever remember her purchasing. Artist: John Denver. Song: Looking For Space.

It was exactly the message I wanted to convey.

I’m looking for space

and to find out who I am…

Everyone is just looking for space. The stuff that we were convinced we needed isn’t bringing us happiness. We are being inundated with too much information and connected to too many too often. The messaging we have been receiving over the past decades is more, more, more. But what we are really searching for is less, less, less.

Then I look in the center

suddenly everything’s clear…

Don’t let your stuff keep you from doing big things. Don’t let your stuff block your path. Now, more than ever, our world needs us to do our big things. It needs us to recognize our gifts and our purpose and find a way to bring them to life. It needs us to see that we all have different responsibilities that demand fulfillment. It needs us to remember that our foundation is built on reciprocity and connectedness and we have an obligation to respond to the whispers.

When we hold on to our stuff for someday, we are living in fear of the future. When we hold on to stuff from our past, we are unable to be fully present in the now. When we are surrounded, both physically and emotionally, by too much, there often isn’t enough space for the truth of our yearnings to connect with us.

We have allowed ourselves to be convinced that all the stuff will make us happy. We have bought in to the messaging that everyone else has it all figured out. We need space to slow down long enough to be imaginative. We need space to daydream. We need space to be able to create. When we declutter our homes, and our minds, we clear the path for new experiences, and new ideas, and new solutions to find their way to us.

Whatever your motivation is, you can create an environment that supports it. Whether it’s a simplified kitchen so you can focus on your health, or a clear desk to be able to write that book the world needs you to write, or an alcove to hibernate in and spin yourself a cocoon while you transform into a butterfly, I encourage you to create the space your soul is telling you it needs. Get rid of the roadblocks. Prime your environment. Get rid of anything that is obstructing your path toward fulfilling your Why.

I view my purpose as helping others create the space they require to manifest their purpose. If I do my job correctly, they will then be better equipped to fulfill their life’s work with the least amount of friction as possible and then be able to do their big things.

What is that one thing you’ve always wanted to do?

What do you want to plant in your field of dreams?

What kind of space have you been looking for?

It’s right there. All you need to do is just listen.

It’s a sweet, sweet dream…
